Big Dog Brass

So getting home late for work, I immediately got to work finishing up this sketch of Dr. Axel Brass for my buddy Brandon “Big Dog” Padgett from Sketch Charlotte. I really put the ink down. Literally. When I finished, I spilled an entire container of waterproof India Ink all over our wonderful dining room table and kitchen floor. What does a cartoonist do? Thank the stars someone invented Greased Lightning (this will unclog any inking tool, and it works wonders on floors and tables, too), as well as paper towels and say “I’m sorry, honey!” a lot while cleaning up.

I admit I kept calling this character Dr. Axel Bronze and Dr. Axel Steel. I finally got his name right. Brandon said I’d be using drybrush on this, and originally I was thinking no, I wouldn’t. But sometimes you just can’t resist. Anyway I had tons of fun doing this in his Planetary sketchbook and hope he likes it, too. Fortunately the spilled ink added a single effect drop on the page that I liked and missed Brandon’s reference comics … mostly. ;)
